Week 43: One Week on Madeira with Olimar Travel

Our 43rd week of waltzing we spent on the island Madeira. An absolute dream… But first things first. This time we could hardly drive by car. We had to fly. That meant that we had to reduce once again our amount of luggage. With your own car you tend to take some additional stuff with you. One small bag here and one pair of shoes fits in here. You have space. On the plane that does not work. Everyone has only one suitcase and one piece of hand luggage… That was somehow adventorous; but worked out in the end. Even Achim’s tripod fit in his suitcase. Though the suitcase afterwards was too heavy. But it works anyway. To the airport we went by train. The travel papers said that the train ride (rail & fly) would be included. So the day before our departure we went to fetch our tickets

Woche 43: Eine Woche Madeira mit Olimar Reisen

Unsere 43.

Sugar Cane at Madeira

We were quite buffeled when we learned that on Madeira not only sugar cane is still grown but also processed in a small factory. So we had to see that. First of all we looked for a sugar cane field. How does it look like? Long poles. Right. But. We were surprised to see that they are kind of purple. But nice. They feel hard and the leaves have sharp edges. Shortly before harvesting the bushy leaves are taken off. A hard work. Not only because it is done by hand without any tool but the fields are nearly all at a steep slope. Without the leaves the canes stay some time on the field so that they can develop more sweetness. After that they are harvested and carried by lorry to the sugar cane factory. All the sugar cane is processed on the island. Nothing is being exported. The sugar

A Banana Plantation on Madeira

In the middle of the island in a small village there is a banana plantation where you can walk through freely. On a small path sometimes separated from stone walls you walk along. But you still can get very near the banana plants and can even touch them. The plants grow surprisingly high and have very thick stems. Nearly like trees. A lot of plants are supported from sticks so that they can carry their heavy burden. A stalk can weigh about 30 kg. At the plantation you can also see the watering system. It is a very tricky system that brings the water down from the mountains to the valley and into the fields. By the way you can hike along this water system which is called „Levadas“. But this is a different subject. At the plantation there are young plants and old ones. Cut trees and right besides

The East Coast of Madeira

After having explored the west coast up to the north we also wanted to see the other side of Madeira, especially the land tongue. We started right away from our hotel and drove to the direction of the airport. We tried to avoid the highway but to take the smaller roads instead so that we could drive through some of the romantic small villages. So first we arrived at Porto Novo which wasn’t that exciting. As we were hungry we stopped at the next snack bar which appeared at the roadside. That was a ‚padaria‘, which not only had a huge offer of snacks but also owned a parrot. It talked funny things and whistled some songs. As the shop assistant spoke hardly English we ordered one of each and tried everything. Everything was yummy and again quite cheap. Additionally the planes fly by very near so that you get

Madeira by Rental Car

First thing at the beginning of our stay on Madeira we wanted to discover the island by rental car. The friendly man at the counter gave us a map where a lot of curves could be seen. That was definitely something for us. We wanted to drive along the west coast. As near as possible to the coast. At the map it looked good. Our aim was Port Moniz. Off we went. But first we stopped at a supermarket to get some water and cookies. Unfortunately you can not drink the water from the tap. The streets here are very hilly and they go very steep up and down. Our rental car is quite new, has a strong motor and good brakes. You will need them. We started from the mall Forum. From there you can drive along the coast line. But quite fast it goes upwards. And very quickly
