Wir befassen uns ja ganz gerne mit Essen und testen – wenn möglich – auch regionale kulinarische Angebote. Das haben wir auf der Insel Sao Miguel auch ausgiebig getan. Nach der Woche auf Madeira ging es nach Sao Miguel, also auf eine der neun Azoreninseln. Geflogen sind wir mit Azores-Airlines mit einer kleineren Propellermaschine. Der Flug dauert nur zwei Stunden und der Start von Madeira war sehr spektakulär und man hatte noch mal einen tollen Blick über die Insel. Diesmal hatten wir vorher online eingecheckt und hatten deswegen schöne Plätze mit Fenster. Leider mussten wir für unser Übergepäck bezahlen. Und das obwohl der Flieger halb leer war… Für 6 kg mussten wir 24 Euro bezahlen. Der Flughafen auf Sao Miguel ist ähnlich klein wie der in Funchal auf Madeira. Das Gepäck kam sehr schnell und wir bekamen auch wieder sehr schnell unseren Mietwagen. Der Vermieter hat mit uns eine Wagenbesichtigung gemacht. Der Wagen hatte eigentlich überall Schrammen… Witzigerweise haben wir direkt nach der Ankunft eine Nachricht bekommen, dass Bekannte gerade mit einem Kreuzfahrtschiff im Hafen von Ponto Delgada liegen.
Week 62 and half of week 63 we spent at the ‚Ruhrpott‘. First we did not know what to do there. But then we left without seeing so many things which we would have loved to see. But what we saw was just great. These pieces of art and sculptures on the old mining waste tips, these creative urban quarters called ‚Kiez‘ and this fascinating industrial culture. Brilliant! We really enjoyed it. Everything was wide and nice and lovely and we would love to come back. After that we had a two day break – if you can call that a break at all. We went to a garage with our car hoping that they could repair it while we are in Portugal. But it is not that easy. The part that might be broken is a part that had been exchanged two years ago together with some other parts.
Woche 62 und die Hälfte der Woche 63 haben wir im Ruhrpott verbracht. Zuerst wussten wir gar nicht, was wir da sollen und dann haben wir wieder so viel nicht gesehen, was wir gerne gesehen hätten. Aber das, was wir erlebt haben, war umwerfend. Diese Kunstwerke auf den Halden, die ungewöhnlichen und kreativen Kieze und die faszinierende Industriekultur. Einfach genial! Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt. Alles war groß und breit und schön und wir kommen sehr gerne wieder. Dann hatten wir zwei Tage Pause – falls man Pause dazu sagen kann. Wir waren mit unserem Auto in der Werkstatt, in der Hoffnung, dass man ihn reparieren könnte, während wir in Portugal sind. Aber das ist nicht so einfach. Das Teil, was wahrscheinlich kaputt ist, das Ausrücklager, wurde schon vor zwei Jahren erneuert zusammen mit einigen anderen Teilen. Und das waren weit über 2000 Euro. 1 Jahr ist es jetzt her, dass wir losgefahren sind auf unsere Walz. Ein ganzes Jahr. Am 17.5.2015 wussten wir überhaupt nicht, was auf uns zukommt, was wir erwarten durften, was für Probleme auftauchen würden. Aber wir haben uns gefreut. Dass es endlich los geht. Und es macht immer noch riesigen Spaß. Ohne eigene Möbel ist kein Problem. In den meisten Fällen haben wir ein schönes großes Hotelzimmer, was ausreicht, dass wir uns wohl fühlen. Ohne Büro auch. Ein Arbeitsplatz für Laptop und Tablet findet sich meisten auch immer in der Unterkunft. Unser Auto haben wir behalten und (toi, toi, toi) es fährt immer noch. Wir haben neue Rituale entwickelt. One year ago we started waltzing. A whole year. On May 17, 2015 we did not know, what we would experience, what to expect, which problems would occur. But we were looking forward to it. And it is still so much fun. Being without own furniture is no problem. Mostly we have a very nice and large hotel room, which is enough for us to feel comfortable. Von den Azoren ging es auf mehr oder weniger direktem Wege in die Sächsische Schweiz. Also um 3 Uhr irgendwas klingelte der Wecker und mit dem Mietwagen ging es zum Flughafen. Dann mit dem Flieger nach Frankfurt, wo wir um 13.30 Uhr ankamen und dann weiter mit dem Zug nach Siegburg. Denn in Hennef stand ja noch unser Auto. Und dann noch ein paar Stunden Auto fahren – und schließlich waren wir in Rathen. Die längste Anreise für uns bisher… Wir waren ja im Oktober schon in der Sächsischen Schweiz, aber da hatten wir etwas Pech mit dem Wetter. Diesmal wollten wir unbedingt diese sagenumwobenen Felsen sehen… Der Montag stand erst Mal im Zeichen des Ankommens, etwas Papierkram und am Nachmittag gleich – wie wir es sehr gern haben – die Besprechung über die möglichen Aktionen und Programmpunkte. On the Azores island Sao Miguel some might have noticed these beautiful road signs made out of white tiles with a dark blue painting. These tiles you can also find in churches or chapels or on walls of houses where they show complete scenes. If you want to know how they are made you should visit the workshop Viera in Lagoa. Here you can see the nearly the whole production. The clay comes from the island but has to be mixed with water so that it gets the perfect texture. Then the clay goes to the different work stations. At one place it will be cast. Here mostly hollow pieces are formed. After the casting each peace has to be reworked and finished. At the factory you will see hundreds of different forms. At another station clay is formed on a potter’s wheel. Here also wonderful pieces are made like
Every country and each region has their own culinary delicacies. Also on Sao Miguel connoisseurs get one’s moneys worth. Cheese When you drive around on the island or are hiking you might notice a lot of cows. Those cows deliver much milk. And from that many different excellent cheeses are made. Directly besides the market hall in Ponta Delgada we discovered a cheese shop which was not only stacked up to the ceiling with shelves full of cheese but also offered more than 40 different varieties. We choose ten, e.g. we asked the sales person to pick ten for us. All of them very really yummy. A nice regional bread to go with it. Fantastic! There is indeed a tea plantation in Europe. And that is on the Azores island Sao Miguel. The hedge like tea bushes grow in rows but also in wave like patterns on the hills in the village Riviera Grande. 7 years the plants have to grow before you can start harvesting. Then they are harvested every 2 or 3 weeks from April until October. After that the plants may rest and are even allowed to bloom. But this will happen in December. Exceptionally we were allowed to drive into the plantation with a tractor and watch the harvesting. Harvesting is not done any more by tender women’s hands but with a kind of a hedge trimmer. A handful of men carry the heavy machine some centimeters above the bushes and thereby cut the upper leaves of the tea plant. Thus only the fresh green leaves are harvestet. The first three
