Wie macht man eine Eierschecke - Der typische Kuchen aus der Sächsischen Schweiz by AchimMeurer.com .

How to make Eierschecke

Everywhere in the cafés or restaurants or at a bakery you will see a cake called „Eierschecke“ a egg custard cake. But how do you do it? We were invited and could watch a baker do it: For the different layers you need different ingrediences. Here they are nicely sorted. For the bottom you need flour, sugar, baking soda and liquid butter. Mix everything. Powder a baking dish with flour. Put the dough on the bottom of the baking form and spread it in a thin layer. Put it up a little bit at the edge. For the curd cheese layer you need to mix curd cheese, custard powder, sugar and eggs. Spread it afterwards onto the bottom. For the next layer stirr custard powder and sugar with milk. Heat this mixture in a pot. Add butter and mix it all. Separate the eggs. Beat the egg whites until they are stiff. Put the egg yolks

Mariner Carnival

Mariner Carnival or „Schifferfastnacht“ as it is called here… We have been to a mariner carnival at Saxon Switzerland. Something new for us. We both come from the Rhineland and we know a thing or two about it… But the mariner carnival somehow is different… The first thing that stands out is the date. The mariner carnival in Postelwitz takes always place at the first weekend in February. So it is not on Rose Monday or Shrove Tuesday. No. It is always at the same date. Here you can also see carnival groups. But they look quite different. Like they just came from ‚Love Boat‘. All dressed in sailor suits or captain’s uniform. And they do carry flags. Rather serious. The battle call is not ‚Alaaf‘ or ‚Helau‘ and also not ‚Halt Pohl‘ or ‚Schöpp Op‘ but ‚Ahoi!‘. But it sounds rather seldom. At the speech in the beginning before the

How to dip your own candles

In the middle of Saxon Switzerland you can not only experience the old handicraft of dipping candles but you can make them yourself. So we had to try it… In an old huge barn you can get everything related to candles and what you need for making your own. First you bring your personal belongings to the cloak room and then you have to choose from the samples which form you want to do. That is a difficult decision. Then you get at the entrance a wooden plate. With this plate you can dip candles or even make lanterns or bowls out of wax. Put the wick into the slits at the plate. One wick makes two candles. First you let the wick soak for 10 seconds. After that the wick is dipped shortly into the wax. Afterwards you let it dry for around one minute. You can hang the plate on

Wintervillage: The Ecovillage Schmilka during the cold season

What happens to the Ecovillage Schmilka in winter? we asked ourselves and went to have a look. Normally during winter time there is not much going on in the region. Therefore a lot of restaurants and hotels are closed. Also Schmilka has had a winter break so far. But 2017 will be different. During the winter the ecovillage will become the wintervilage. And when it gets colder people tend to get closer together. Also at the „Bio- und Nationalpark Resort Schmilka“. This then changes to the winter village. And the center is transferred to the mill. Nearly everything happens there. First there is the reception. Which then is at the mill. For the whole village. From here you move into your eco room at the hotel Helvetia, a rustic holiday flat at the old forester’s house or one of the generous holiday homes with view to the Elbe at the

How to Make Herb Pouches

We had the chance to watch how individual composed her pouches for massages are made. Of course you need some linen and some strings. And herbs. Lots of herbs. But there are enough of those here. For inner or outer use. They are harvested in the herb garden right behind the house but also while walking or hiking in the nature. The selected herbs are put onto the prepared cloth. The choice depends on the effect you wish for. A lot of herbs fit into such a pouch. When there are enough herbs in the linen you can take the corners and carefully push the herbs together. You have to push hard because the pouches have to endure something afterwards. Do a quality check once in a while. Afterwards the pouch is tied. You have to be careful again and tie a very tight knot. After that the handle is

Week 89: First week of Waltzing in 2017

Yeah! On the road again. Our holidays were really important and of course we both were ill. What would you expect. But we also had long walks, went to the cinema and to a music. Achim cooked a lot of dishes for us and we watched a lot of movies and tried to relax.   Right after that we went to the CMT in Stuttgart. The years before we have been to the ITB in Berlin, but for our project it was not really successful. Therefore we tried in 2017 the CMT. We liked the show. It was nice and manageable and during the week you have a lot of time at the different stands. We met a lot of people and had some interesting and quite lang conversations. Here you wont’t get disrupted that often like at the ITB during a talk. And we had the impression that

Week 77 and 78

Our 77th week lead us again to the Ruhr area. This time everything was – according to the season – about Christmas markets. So we spent nearly every day around the blue hour at one of the many many Christmas markets and had a look around what was offered. There were a historical market, mother Hulda shaking her pillow, the biggest Christmas Tree and a romantic net of lights. Additionally there were numerous booths full of interesting things and of course something to eat and drink. As supposed for a real Christmas Market… Here you can find our report: Christmas Markets in the Ruhr Area     But we have also been at the Ruhr wetlands. Early in the morning with a very nice light and mood at the outdoors.   And we have been ice skating at a very special an unusual place. At the old coke oven plant at

Christmas Markets in the Ruhr Area

How about strolling over a Christmasmarket in nice warm clothes, looking for new ideas for gifts and having a hot drink in-between to warm up? We went around the different markets in the Ruhr area. Every one is different. Each one has its own specialities. But they are all nice and interesting. Hattingen The first Christmasmarket on our list was the nostalgic market in Hattingen. Already on our way to it we were lead by historic signs and passed by the house from mother Hulda. This house is also an Advent calendar. And mother Hulda herself opens a door each day and at the same time shakes her pillow. There might drop a gold taler or two. Behind her house the historic market begins at the church square, surrounded by half timbered houses. There are only a few booths, but there is a DIY corner, where children can bake cookies.

Week 74 – 76: Großarl

After our pitstop we went to Großarl. We have been here one year ago. Again we lived at the Hotel Kristall – or rather in their new holiday apartments at the Alpenpark and in the hotel Tauernhof. As both have made changes and renovations new photos were needed and we nearly only did that. The Tauernhof is family run and has 100 rooms. Additionally there is a huge restaurant and an ample spa. That’s a lot to do if you want to take pictures of all of that. And don’t forget the holiday flats. Those vary in size and partition. In the biggest one 8 people can stay. With two bathrooms and several sleeping rooms there are immediately a number of photo motives. HDR-Meurer wouldn’t be the HDR-Meurer if he would not take HDR-photos. This technique though is more time consuming than normal photography so that each picture requires more

Week 73: Pit Stop

After the kitchen party at the Weinbergschlösschen we went to our old homeland – to Graz – for a pit stop. This week had not been booked so one day we decided to put no further effort in it to sell it but to use it as a break. https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/795687507480428544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw So we planed the interior of our new car, which wasn’t that easy. Plans were changed several times. Things were measured, discussed what could fit where, and plans redrawn. Sketches were complemented only to be discarded afterwards. At the moment there exists one version which has not been changed for a couple of days… Let’s see… https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/795945045593587712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw Achim tried to get rid of his horrible cold. I have been to another therapist with my shoulder. He thinks that it is an over expansion of the joint capsule. He showed me some exercises that I am doing now. It looks like
