Wollstadel Bramberg

The Wollstadel is a paradise for wool lovers

The Wollstadel in Bramberg is a paradise for all that are interested in sheepwool and its products. Here you can find wool in any colours but also handmade hats, jackets or special shoes. Felting We were invited to watch and learn about felting. The very fine preparated wool is placed on a model and after that is soaked with soap water. When the form is fixed you can remove the model and start felting by gently rubbing the wool with the soap water. This takes a while. When the piece is strong enough you can decorate it. We choose a capricorne which lives in the region but our star sign is also capricorne. And we added lambs and alpine flowers. Again you have to rub the wool with lot of soap water. Or you roll it with a giant Sushi-Mat. When the felt is strong enough you can rinse it

Gasthof Kröll Niedernsill smoked fish

Home made food at Gasthof Kröll Niedernsill

The owner of Gasthof Kröll in Niedernsill, Ralf Kröll, is a trained chef and loves not only to cook for his guests but also to prepare other delicacies like self baked bread or fresh cheese. We had the chance to watch him baking bread, smoking trouts and preparing fresh cheese. Baking Bread For the bread he had the dough prepared the night before. Again very early (v e r y early!) we watched him heat the oven. The oven is placed in a separate baking house in the middle of the huge ground and lovely garden of the Gasthof. There Ralf owns a baking oven, a smoking oven and a grill plate. The oven is stocked with wood to the rim and then a fire is started and may burn down for nearly two hours. In the mean time the trouts were prepared and hung in the smoking oven. And

Highmoor Mittersill

The Highmoor in Mittersill

After all these delicacies we longed for some nature and moving. The highmoor was suggested to us because you can also visit it without bright sunshine. So we went to see the highmoor. I thought it is called highmoor because it is high above the sea level. But no – it is a special form of moor. Just a highmoor. I won’t go into details. I would explain it wrong anyway. Instead we suggest you walk the way with the explanation boards. You learn everything. Wait! They are not in English, are they? Well there are some pictures. And maybe you have to search google or wikipedia. Anyway: Try the way through the highmoor. It is stunning. You start from Gasthof Tauernblick and walk through the gate. Then turn directly right and you will see the information centre. After that follow the cosy soft way with the wood chips. The

Butter Pinzgau Beer Cheese Schaunberghof Niedernsill

How Pinzgauer Beer Cheese is made

Very early in the morning (v e r y early!) we visited the Shaunberghof in Niedernsill to learn about the making of Pinzgauer Beer Cheese. First you need milk separated into milk and cream. From the cream we made butter. The milk we used for the cheese. It needs a certain temperature. Than you add lab-ferment. And you have to wait for an hour. Luckyly the butter was ready and we had a georgeous breakfast with bread and freshly made butter. That nearly made up for the early start… In the mean time the lab-ferment has done its job and the milk has coagulated and was cut into small pieces. It was put into forms and the whey was pressed out. After one day you can bring the pieces to the cheese cellar where it will get a massage with salt every day for eight weeks. You can buy the

To pan for gold in Rauris

To feel just once in a lifetime like in former times at the Klondike and pan gold is possible in Rauris, where gold is mined since thousands of years. It was the highest gold mine in the world and 10 % of all the gold worldwide came from Rauris. Mining would not be cost effective any more. But there is still gold to find and you can try panning for gold as a hobby. So we had to try that ourselves… We parked our car at Gasthof Bodenhaus with costs and walked some minutes to the idyllic gold panning place. Equipment like shovel and pan is included in the entrance fee and were given to us. In case that you did not bring your wellingtons you can borrow them as well. They even had Achim’s size. With that we were ready to start. The three steps of panning for gold were quickly explained

Nationalpark Hohe Tauern Nationalparkzentrum Mittersill

A visit to the Nationalparkworlds

We have visited the Nationalparkworlds in Mittersill. As you walk in there is a huge model of the Großglockner. Very impressive. You can see the different ways to climb up the mountain. I would have loved to see little tiny figures to show the proportions and the exact way to the top. At the information centre you get – as the name implies – a lot of information. About plants, animals, glaciers, avalanches, alps, history, minerals, sagas, and much more. Tell us about information overkill. At the nationalparkworlds you get really much of it. Okay! There are ten worlds! If you have enough of all the information you can relax at the alpine pasture. Some really do take a nap there. How funny! But it is very soothing. The noises from the alps are lifelike and right beside you lies a cow. Thank god there are no olfactory impressions, optical,

Kraftplatz Nagelköpfle Niedernsill

Hiking Trail to Nagelköpfl

The hiking trail to Nagelköpfle was recommended to us because there is supposed to be a power place. That sounded interesting and we thought it would be a good idea to do physical exercise after the photoshoot of the Gasthof. We started directly from our Gasthof, which is very near to the trail which is also offered as a round trip. But we took the bidirectional way. First you walk up the road.   Surprisingly there were wine yards in the turns. We would love to taste the wine. In the fifth turn you leave the road and the proper hiking trail starts. Presumably a lot of people have walked this path as a so called sumpter way. Maybe that is the reason that you feel very comfortable walking there.   But maybe it is the actual path or the view. Behind each bend there is a complete different landscape

Niedernsill

First impressions from Niedernsill

We are in Niedernsill at Salzburgerland. It is a small place with 2000something inhabitants at the river Salzach. After spending some hours sitting in the car on our way to Niedernsill we took the chance to have a nice (photo)walk. While walking through the lovely town the decoration of it is eye-catching. All over Niedernsill you find small and cosy places with benches or other seating. And everything looks quite new and tidy. As you enter the village for example: Crossing the bridge over the Salzach there is this lovely place with information board with a map and event notes. And as a special offer there is are scales. Good for us as we have given away ours. Right at the center you will find the beautiful church. We had to enter of course and found two striking modern offers: Holy Water by the liter and a grave candle vending
