Week 51: On a houseboat on the Müritz – Part 1
Part 2
Next morning we went with our skipper Rolf to Fürstenberg. The villages nearby are tiny and nice. It is really worth a stop to have a walk around. Maybe for having a coffee or doing the groceries. After that you can drive on. Or you stay at the harbour until next morning. If the harbour is too far away you can take the bike.
Today on our trip there was the first self service lock. Was no problem at all. Though we had expected it. You pull a lever and everything else is announced on a display. We were lucky and did not have to wait too long.
Again we had to get fresh water. Very adventurous. At the footbridge there was no hose and we had to get one from the ‚Bootshaus‘. For the water post you need 50 cent coins. So we had to go and change some. And then they always fell through… Did we mention that everything takes so much time on a houseboat?
The next adventure was already waiting for us. We went through the Havel channel. Incredible nature and many curves. Like serpentines. You can see the approaching boats through the gras. Looks funny. Here we stayed for the night. As you are not allowed to anchor we used the ground hooks. Of course one got loose soon so we had to fix it again. But then it stayed in place.
At half past four in the morning there was a stunning fog on the water. So set your alarm clock.
We went on to Zehdenick. Here we had to leave the boat. Which meant we had to pack and carry everything from board… We went back to the harbour village Müritz. There we got on to another houseboat. A classical one. A Kormoran. After putting everything in place and dinner we went out on the lake to watch the sunset.
And again right next morning we went with Skipper Rolf out. This time we went on the big lakes. The lakes are compared to the channels much more rough and gruff. Sometimes a wave hits the boat and you should have warm clothes.
We passed by Waren. A very inviting village. We did not land but went on via Malchow with a funny turning bridge to Plau am See. There is a light house and another interesting form of a bridge. A lift bridge. Very exciting.
We spent the night at the marina and next morning we had an office day to work on photos and texts.
We stayed three more nights there and strolled through the streets, visited the fishermen and discovered very nice places.
And we went hiking and did the ‚Stadtwaldrundweg‘ which we highly recommend because you walk through untouched and beautiful nature.
Phhh, that were two eventful weeks! Many new impressions, new experiences and interesting places.
Conclusion
We would go on a houseboat any time again. But we would do some things differently.
Would you like to spent a houseboat vacation?
