Christmas and New Year without Snow in Tennengau

After two wonderful concept hotels we went to a destination again: Tennengau in Salzburg Land. Like many other destinations in Salzburg Land winter is all about holidays in the snow, which refuses to come somehow this year. But there are other things to do… Moving in three days before Christmas means there is only one subject: Christmas market! We already had been to the mountain advent in Großarl and the very day we arrived in Abtenau the local christmas market took place there. So we directly went there. There you could get really nice things, a lot of handicraft and of course culinary arts. At one booth a woman was spinning and we ate the best frensh toast from Salzburg Land. Unfortunately the market is only open for a couple of days. Doesn’t matter. There are other christmas markets. For example some in down town Salzburg. The Christkindl Market at

Bio-Käse vom Fürstenhof in Kuchl

Make your own cheese

Quite often we are asked what we will do after finishing waltzing… Maybe we want to make cheese??!!?? Several times we have watched and documented how cheese is made. But we only could watch. At the Fürstenhof in Kuchl in Salzburg Land this is different. Here you can make your own cheese. There you can join a cheese workshop. We had to try that!! At the show cheese dairy you find everything you need for producing cheese. Everything is a small model – also the copper cauldron. You get an instruction in writing and all the tools like thermometer, ladle, sieve, matches… Everything is waiting for you. You need raw milk. Every participant gets around 3 l. Some butter milk is added to acidify the milk a little bit. Just a shot glas full. After that the milk is warmed to 39 C. Therefore you need the matches and the thermometer.

Hotel Kristall Großarl

Hotel Kristall in Großarl

Once again we have been booked by a hotel directly: from Hotel Kristall in Großarl. To be booked by a hotel means a hell of a lot of hotel photos and also means that our car will not be moved for a whole week. Something different for a change. Hotel Kristall has rebuild and extended their building so that photos were needed from the new restaurant and lobby area as well as from the new rooms. Because family Hettegger new our shooting method a lot of things have been perfectly prepared and so the shooting went quite smoothly and quickly. Anyway. There has still been enough time to visit the Salzburg mountain advent and also walk the chapel hiking path. At the mountain advent in Großarl the village center becomes a christmas market. Everywhere there are huts where handmade things and culinary varieties can be admired and be purchased as well

Week 16 and 17: Salzburger Saalachtal

We spent no less than two weeks at the Kirchenwirt in Unken in the Salzburger Saalachtal. A beautiful house with a super team. We felt very comfortable there and again had a feeling of being with friends. The Saalach valley presents itself a little bit rough in the beginning with its steep and naked rockwalls. But when you get closer it becomes softer.  A side trip to one of the side valleys is worth the effort. Whether Heutal with the Gföllsteig or Au and Obermeyrberg or just walking along the Saalach; there are quite a few wildly romantic hiking trails from plain flat to alpine. Even the early morning sport tracks lead through beautiful landscapes and areas. To some experiences we had to drive; others were directly in front of the hotel. But you needn’t leave the Saalach valley at all during your vacation. It offers everything. Culture, history, adventure

TOP 25 Photos from Salzburgerland

Again – like with the Black Forest – it was difficult to define our top 25 pictures from four weeks at the Salzburger Land. In May we have been two weeks in Niedernsill and in September two weeks at the Saalachtal. And here are our top 25 photos from these 4 weeks:

Impressions from Salzburger Saalachtal

Here comes a wild mixture of beautiful things, that we discovered in the Salzburger Saalachtal. First there is the Jakobus church in Unken. It is a pilgrimage church at the Way of St. James and is really extraordinary. Inside it is nice and bright and opulent decorated. Especially the lot of gold attracted our attention. And of course the double gallery for choir and organ. We have never seen something like that before. We have been in St. Martin and strolled through the beautifully installed farmgarden. Here you can relax and slow down. Everything is well-kept and lovingly and generously laid out. You feel right away invited… By coincidence came to the ‚flower queen of Pinzgau‘, who really earned her title, don’t you think? We walked further in the direction of the Kneipp area and – surprise: There is a mill wheel, which is still working: And finally the Kneipp

Saalachtal Gföllsteig Unken Heutal

The Gföllsteig in Heutal

A gem between the hiking trails is the ‚Gföllsteig‘ in Heutal. We went by car to the Gasthaus Hintergföll. There we parked our car. The Gföllsteig starts only a couple of meters away from it. It meanders as a small and steep but wildly romantic path down into the canyon to the Unkenbach. At each curve you have a different view to a meadow, a hollow way, sometimes stony, sometimes soft. Wonderful! We spent some time in the creek bed and went unhurried up again. The descent is marked with 25 minutes and the ascent with 35 minutes. That is about the time that it took us even with taking a lot of photos. If you like you can go further, e. g. along the Unkenbach to the Schwarzenbergklamm (a flume) and then on the round tour back to the Gasthof Hintergföll. There are several possibilities.

Sonnenaufgang auf der Loferer Alm

Sunrise at the Loferer Alm in the Saalachtal

Wednesday morning it was time! The alarm clock was set for 4:15 am; a quick view out of the window – there: a starlit sky. Genious! That will be a stunning sunrise! A quick jump into our hiking clothes and up on the top of the mountain. We went by car up to the Loferer Alm. We thought we had permission to go as far as to the Schönblick Alm and would have to walk the rest. But our ticket was valid also for the second barrier. So we drove to our viewpoint and waited unhurried for the sunrise. So it was a sunrise deluxe 😉 Because we have been on top earlier than expected we were greeted with a fantastic starry sky. I couldn’t get much better than that. Then came the first glimpse of dawn. More and more light and colours. Clouds that were lighted from below. And

Saalachtaler Schmankerln

We are definitely interested also in culinary arts and therefore looked for yummy things in the Saalachtal (Saalach valley). And here are one or the other delicacies waiting to be discovered… Probably you get those also in other regions but everyone has his or her own receipt and the term will be different. Kaspressknödel & Kaiserschmarrn On different menus we came across some dishes that we did not know so far. But there were also some well known like Kaspressknödel (a dumpling with cheese) or Kaiserschmarrn (a torn pancake). But nothing tastes better than handmade stuff if possible on a wood-fired oven on an alpine hut after a long hike. Mmmmmmmmm…. Yummy…. Pinzgauer Bladln Bladln were new to us. We could try them from Helga at the Hundsfußalm. They are mostly made from rye flour or rye and wheat flour. And you get them filled or unfilled. They are filmy.
