A Banana Plantation on Madeira

In the middle of the island in a small village there is a banana plantation where you can walk through freely. On a small path sometimes separated from stone walls you walk along. But you still can get very near the banana plants and can even touch them. The plants grow surprisingly high and have very thick stems. Nearly like trees. A lot of plants are supported from sticks so that they can carry their heavy burden. A stalk can weigh about 30 kg. At the plantation you can also see the watering system. It is a very tricky system that brings the water down from the mountains to the valley and into the fields. By the way you can hike along this water system which is called „Levadas“. But this is a different subject. At the plantation there are young plants and old ones. Cut trees and right besides

The East Coast of Madeira

After having explored the west coast up to the north we also wanted to see the other side of Madeira, especially the land tongue. We started right away from our hotel and drove to the direction of the airport. We tried to avoid the highway but to take the smaller roads instead so that we could drive through some of the romantic small villages. So first we arrived at Porto Novo which wasn’t that exciting. As we were hungry we stopped at the next snack bar which appeared at the roadside. That was a ‚padaria‘, which not only had a huge offer of snacks but also owned a parrot. It talked funny things and whistled some songs. As the shop assistant spoke hardly English we ordered one of each and tried everything. Everything was yummy and again quite cheap. Additionally the planes fly by very near so that you get

Madeira by Rental Car

First thing at the beginning of our stay on Madeira we wanted to discover the island by rental car. The friendly man at the counter gave us a map where a lot of curves could be seen. That was definitely something for us. We wanted to drive along the west coast. As near as possible to the coast. At the map it looked good. Our aim was Port Moniz. Off we went. But first we stopped at a supermarket to get some water and cookies. Unfortunately you can not drink the water from the tap. The streets here are very hilly and they go very steep up and down. Our rental car is quite new, has a strong motor and good brakes. You will need them. We started from the mall Forum. From there you can drive along the coast line. But quite fast it goes upwards. And very quickly

The Meurers try Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing with higher age? Is it possible? Don’t you have to do this already as a child so that it works out at all? Or do you have to be so fit that you could run a marathon anyway? The picture that we had here in the Tannheimer Valley does answer the last question with ’no‘. At the slopes there are young and old ones, long distance lovers with backpacks including snacks and sportsmen that seem to train for the next Skitrail. But how does it really work? We did the test.  Skis and shoes you can easily rent so that you don’t have to invest much. The shoes are like hiking shoes. They are ankle-high and have a fortification. Otherwise they fit quite comfortable and give you a good hold. The skis are chosen after hight and weight. We learned why from our skiing teacher Andre. We

The Meurers at the Skitrail 2016

Those who know us know also that we normally don’t care about sporting events. We don’t own a tv since 2008 and we nearly never attend a sporting event. If we visit a stadium it is because there is a music concert (like Deep Purple live in Concert). But now there was a huge sporting event in Tannheim: The Skitrail 2016. And because waltzing is also about looking beyond one’s nose we went to see it. We have to admit: It was fun. The organisation was perfect. We watched the installation and everything went smoothly and quiet. We have no clue about cross country skiing but the event was even interesting for know-nothings. Friday there was a training with Peter Schlickenrieder. Only by watching it you could take quite a few tipps home. And we actually have seen some spectators doing dry practices. In the late afternoon there was a technique course for children.

We went winter hiking

Do you know winter hiking? We never heard of it before. But it’s great! Here at Tannheimer Valley you get a special winter-hiking map and there are a huge amount of winter hiking trails. We had to try them of course. You already know by now that we like to walk and hike and even like to climb a mountain once in a while. And yes we like to walk in snow. I like the sound of snow under your shoes. And now that I own new winter shoes I even like it more. We tried several ways. Two high altitude hiking trails and one directly from the hotel. Both is great. One time you can leave your car at parking lot and start right away from the hotel. We went to the lake Vilsalp  (Vilsalpsee). The street is blocked for cars during the day time (another thing that other destinations could

Hot Air Ballooning and Festival in Tannheimer Valley

The arrival in Tannheimer Valley was a little bit difficult. Because of snowy and icy roads we needed twice as much time as the sat nav predicted and only arrived in the evening at our hotel. Therefore we were planning an easy Monday morning. Like sleeping long and get to know the knew region and so on… But then the phone rang and we were asked whether we could go for a hot air balloon ride the next morning. Did we hear hot air balloon ride??? We joined a hot air balloon festival a couple of years ago and did a ride as well. Therefore we did not need much time to think it over but said yes right away. And we have not been disappointed. At the hot air balloon festival at the Tannheimer Valley a new balloon has been baptized and therefore quite a lot of balloons were

Bio-Käse vom Fürstenhof in Kuchl

Make your own cheese

Quite often we are asked what we will do after finishing waltzing… Maybe we want to make cheese??!!?? Several times we have watched and documented how cheese is made. But we only could watch. At the Fürstenhof in Kuchl in Salzburg Land this is different. Here you can make your own cheese. There you can join a cheese workshop. We had to try that!! At the show cheese dairy you find everything you need for producing cheese. Everything is a small model – also the copper cauldron. You get an instruction in writing and all the tools like thermometer, ladle, sieve, matches… Everything is waiting for you. You need raw milk. Every participant gets around 3 l. Some butter milk is added to acidify the milk a little bit. Just a shot glas full. After that the milk is warmed to 39 C. Therefore you need the matches and the thermometer.

One day in the kitchen of the Weinberg-Schlösschen

The Hotel Weinberg-Schlösschen at Oberheimbach sets great store by culinary arts. Here everything is handmade. We were allowed to spend a whole day in the kitchen and watch how the super team of Marc Lambrich works. From the delivery of the goods to the preparation to the arranging before serving – we saw everything. Have fun looking at the photos! You’d better read this blog post postprandial. Otherwise you might get hungry.
