Week 66 and 67: Porto and the North of Portugal

From Lisbon we drove towards a more quiet region: To Porto. To the little sister of the capital as they say. We took two deviations from our route. First to Fatima with its huge monastery. But we actually did not see anything of it as there have not been any parking places left. Every place was occupied. And there are very many parking lots. Maybe it was because of the Sunday. We went on to Coimbra. There we spent much more time. We walked through the alleys. Uphill and downhill and admired again beautiful houses decorated with tile pattern and squiggled balconies. It is a wonder that all still exists and there are no architectural blunders from the 70s or 80s. In the early evening we checked into our hotel with a sea view. Here everybody was much more relaxed than in Lisbon. Breakfast here is nice and the Wifi

Week 65 – Lisbon

There was quite a difference between Algarve and Lisbon. Capital instead of steep coasts. Many people instead of much landscape. Traffic in Lisbon is rather exhausting and after taking our rental once to get to an appointment within the town the rental car stayed in the car park. And we changed to metro, taxi or tuk-tuk. That worked fine. We only took our breakfast once in the five star hotel and rather went for the rest of the week to small cafes which are also visited by the inhabitants. That was nice. At the hotel there was a lot of chaos and stress at the buffet. The waiter were overchallenged and it was noisy and hectically. That is not our idea of a relaxed breakfast. The touristic highlights have also not been our cup of tea. Dozens of coaches which spill out big tourist groups and people that queue in

Week 63 and 64 – Algarve in Portugal

Somehow we get lost in counting our weeks because we have been booked for ten days or longer – not that we would complain, though… Our second part of week 63 and week 64 we spent in Portugal at the Algarve. Algarve – dream like coast with steep rock walls, incredible colours of the water and very good mediteranien food. We stayed at the resort Quinta do Paraiso. And there was everything that defines a resort: pool, pool bar, animation, fixed and guided tours and buffets with a lot of well known dishes… We arrived late after our flight and picking up our rental car. We have been searching for our house in this huge area. We should search a couple of times though during the next days even with the  support – or shall we say misguidance? – of our sat nav. Our best times was 15 minutes search

Week 62 and Parts of Week 63

Week 62 and half of week 63 we spent at the ‚Ruhrpott‘. First we did not know what to do there. But then we left without seeing so many things which we would have loved to see. But what we saw was just great. These pieces of art and sculptures on the old mining waste tips, these creative urban quarters called ‚Kiez‘ and this fascinating industrial culture. Brilliant! We really enjoyed it. Everything was wide and nice and lovely and we would love to come back. After that we had a two day break – if you can call that a break at all. We went to a garage with our car hoping that they could repair it while we are in Portugal. But it is not that easy. The part that might be broken is a part that had been exchanged two years ago together with some other parts.

Week 62: Siegerland-Wittgenstein

From Mattsee we went right away to Siegerland-Wittgenstein. Our travel lasted longer than expected because there was a lot of traffic and all the alternative routes have been blocked because of a sports event. But eventually we arrived at the Hotel Pfeffermühle and had our meeting about the program with a nice lunch in Deuz. https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/764917405311197184 On the wishlist there were again far too many items. Somehow there seems to be a huge need for photos. Especially for owned material that you can use freely. Our first task was a visit to a charcoal burner. Very interesting. We are always happy when we can document an old handicraft. But we are much more pleased when there are efforts to keep that handicraft alive. The charcoal burner that we visited is not only a member of an international charcoal burner society but has also three apprentices They seem to have had

Week 61: Mattsee in the Summer

So we are again in and at Mattsee. (Our report from Mattsee in March you can read here) We arrived at beautiful sunshine and on the lake there was a lot of activity. Boats, surfers, SUPs, swimmer… Everybody was in and on the water. Right next morning we talked about the photo motives and were really lucky to find two wonderful models, which dedicated one whole day of their vacation to a photo shooting. We went once through the complete hotel. From the rooftop to the spa, on the balcony, at lunch, at a pick nick on a paddle boat, at dinner and finally around sunset in the pool. The whole day we took pictures. But the results are not to bad, aren’t they? We visited the museum of the monastery and admired the treasures that the church collected over the centuries. At the cafe in the castle we had some

Week 59: Still at the Tannheimer Valley

Again a week is over. But it does not get boring. What happened in the first week you can read here. This week we received a „Gästekarte“ guest card and a „Bergfreund-Karte“. We first had to read and check what you can do with it. https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/757142700030300160 We stay at the Hotel Drei Tannen with a huge balcony and a nice view. Which is very practical so that we can quickly decide whether we should go for a photo hunt or not. Like that we have discovered a gorgeous rainbow. With the Bergfreund-Karte you can only use each lift once. But we drove to the top of the Neunerköpfle even on a cloudy day. And – what a surprise – it was really nice there on top. We had a small pick nick in a meadow. Which is also very interesting, especially when all the hikers walk by or a para

Week 58: Back at Tannheimer Valley

Three weeks at the Tannheimer Valley. For the third time we are here. After our visit in winter and our experiences in spring, we now discover the valley in summer. And that is very nice. Not only that we feel very well here. But it is also nice to come back to work to a place. You know your way and do not need to search. You know where you can find what and do not have to think about whether Rot Flüh is a person, a mountain or a river… You have heard it before and can relate to it. Subjects are clear. Some things we have already done in winter times we will do again in the summer. Of course cross country skiing does not work – or walk across a lake. But some hiking trails can be walked in winter and in summer time. Some cable cars

Week 60: Still at the Tannheimer Tal

Our third week at the Tannheimer Valley startet with pure luxury: no moving! We could just stay. No packing! No carloading! No journey… Heaven. About our second week you can read here. But we still had enough to do. Editing photos, writing texts and put storifies together. It never gets boring. Monday we had a special photo shooting. At the new openend climbing and boulder hall at Tannheim. Some ambitious climbers have also been there to test the different routes and problems. And we were among of them. No – not for climbing. Just for watching! Talking about watching! A sunset is always nice to watch. Also at the Tannheimer Tal you can experience some very nice events. Unfortunately the cable car does not go at that time. That would be great. A sunset tour… We also visited the water play ground in Schattwald; also with models. This time they

Week 57: At the BurgStadtHotel

Week 57 we spent at the BurgStadtHotel in Kastellaun. A quite unusual hotel. Which hotel do you know that has a camping ground attached to it and also a flight simulator. But one thing after the other… After our arrival we had a short trip to Kastellaun and walked to the old town with the castle. And we have been to the lavender labyrinth. Of course we did some photo sessions at the camping ground. A real photo shoot with models and props. Even camper models… And we had a photoshooting at the travel agency Faber, which was great fun. https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/753204937090293760 https://twitter.com/DieMeurers/status/753210344882003968 We walked the kyrill hiking path which demonstrates the power of a storm but also shows how nature fights its way back. In the eventing we could enjoy some very colorful sunsets. One evening we went out with an old-timer Fort Model A and visited some nice places.
